THE CITY OF VARN — HISTORY & LEGACY

Now Reborn as Civitas Solarii Aeternum

“Keep what is good, lose what is not, and always move forward.”

This is the generally accepted history, as remembered and passed forward, for the City of Varn.

Roleplay on Varn has always respected the spirit and structure of the books of John Norman, and as every Gorean knows, there are countless cities across the vastness of Gor that remain unseen or unrecorded in the chronicles. Varn was simply one of them... until it wasn’t.

🌍 GEOGRAPHY & FOUNDING

The City of Varn, sometimes called "The Lost City" or "the Jewel of Worlds End", lies on a remote isle 300 pasangs west of Cos and Tyros, in the so-called “unexplored” territory known as The End of the World. Shrouded in mist and often unreachable by conventional charts, it was protected by distance, and by the will of the Priest-Kings.

The city prospered on rich mineral wealth and fertile lands, developing a strong navy to patrol the dangerous surrounding seas. It was not uncommon for its ships to fend off great sea beasts with harpoons forged in the very mines beneath the island’s green hills.

🌿 CULTURE & CUSTOMS

Varn followed the castes, the codes, and the tenets of Gor — but isolation gave rise to uniquely vibrant traditions.

• Fashion and affection are more fluid: colors clash joyfully, love flows freely, and while caste boundaries are honored, they’re not always color-coded.

• Celebration is sacred: Music, dance, and sensuality thrive in the taverns and homes of its people.

• Honor is personal: Though the laws are clear, it is in the quiet choices of daily life that the soul of Varn is measured.

🌹 kajirae/ kajiri  of VARN

The kajirae / kajiri of Varn are famed for their passion, training, and unique island lineage. Many were bred from generations of peace, beauty, and artistry — shaped by water, sun, and song. Their bearing is graceful, their joy often contagious, and their loyalty deep.

As Varn began to trade with the greater Gorean world, many of these exotic treasures were lost to wealthy collectors or vanished into private homes. But a new generation rises — and the art of training, of true connection lives on.

🔥 A TURNING OF THE AGE — THE RETURN

After years abroad, sailing between ports in Cos and among the islands of the LarTorvis archipelago, a Gorean man named Varn — a Commander of the Isles and a seasoned Captain of Cos — returned once again to the city that had long whispered to him in dreams.

This time, he did not come alone.

From the deck of a proud fleet anchored just beyond the Archipelago, Varn and his first girl, Aine, rowed ashore in a small skiff. With them, they brought samples of crafted goods, scrolls of trade, and a will to rekindle old ties.

He met the Administrator of Varn not as a conqueror or rival, but as an explorer an adventurer, seeking proof of his own determined quest to find evidence of those who worship the Sun. After long evenings of drink, discussion, and contemplation — and more than a few wise insights served between the glances of a clever kajira — they found agreement.

Not in conquest. But in collaboration.

From that beginning, something new took root.

In 2021, Varn accepted the mantle of Ubar — not through force, but with consent and purpose — to preserve the city, secure its lands, and awaken its spirit once more.

✦ SOLARII — A CITY REBORN

Thus, the City of Varn was reborn as Civitas Solarii — the City of the Sun.

Still Gorean in blood and spine.

But now radiant in soul.

A city of honor, art, and rebirth.

Today, Solarii welcomes all who hold honor in their hearts — warriors, scribes, healers, builders,farmers, artisans and kajirae/ kajiri, and those simply seeking a fresh chapter. It is a place where stories grow, laughter echoes, and the bonds of companionship outlast the sea winds.

✦ Civitas Solarii maintains Gorean codes and caste structure.  Here, imagination is honored as much as tradition. Players are encouraged to weave their own paths, develop deep characters, and stretch the possibilities of what Gor can be.
