🐊 TRAVELOG: THE VILLAGE OF KURTZAL 🐊
╚═════════════════════════════════════════╝
⚓ A Stopover on the Muddy Banks of Gor ⚓
To the high-flying Tarnsman, Kurtzal appears as little
more than a smudge of brown clay and wooden docks hugging
the banks of the river. It is a humble settlement, lacking
the grand, multi-tiered cylinders of Ar or the architectural
pride of Ko-ro-ba. Yet, for the merchants pulling the massive
river barges (flotas) up from Kasra, Kurtzal is an essential,
albeit exhausting, reality of Gorean commerce.
───────────────────────────────────────────
👃 THE ATMOSPHERE: SWEAT, SILT, & THARLARION
───────────────────────────────────────────
Arriving by flat-bottomed river barge, the first thing
that hits you is the scent. It is a heavy mix of river silt,
the pungent musk of sun-baked tharlarion (the giant, reptilian
beasts used for draft labor), and the sharp tang of cheap
Pagus—the fermented grain beer favored by the lower castes.
Kurtzal is a town of loading and unloading. The architecture
consists primarily of low, squat buildings constructed of
sun-dried mud brick and rough-cut timber hauled down from the
northern forests. The streets are unpaved, turning into a
thick, clinging mire whenever the river swells or a seasonal
downpour hits.
───────────────────────────────────────────
📦 LIFE ON THE DOCKS
───────────────────────────────────────────
The heartbeat of the village is entirely dictated by the
arrival of the merchant vessels. Because the river rapids grow
treacherous further north, larger deep-draft barges must
transfer their cargoes here to smaller, nimbler rivercraft
or overland caravans bound toward the Vosko region.
• 👥 THE LABORERS: Members of the Peasant Caste and various
un-casted laborers work under the blistering sun, their
backs glistening with sweat as they haul crates of Vulo
eggs, casks of river-grain, and heavy textiles.
• 🧂 THE GOODS: Occasionally, one catches the distinct
metallic scent of ironwork from the northern mountains or
the unmistakable cylindrical crates of Red Salt moving up
from the mines of Kasra.
───────────────────────────────────────────
🍻 NOTABLE LOCAL ESTABLISHMENTS
───────────────────────────────────────────
⚠️ TRAVELER'S ADVISORY: Do not expect the luxury of a high-city
tavern here. The local establishments serve a utilitarian purpose.
🔥 THE LAUGHING KAJIRA
The largest tavern overlooking the main wharf. It is a raucous,
dim, and smoky dive where the tables are thick planks of wood
resting on old barrels.
